Are you an aspiring affiliate marketer, sometimes referred to as an Internet Marketer? If so, you might consider the Three Things you need to have in place to assure success.
What are these Three Things?
The first of these ideas is to present only one offer per web page (salespage). This doesn’t mean you can’t offer bonuses on the page. Actually you should!
Focus your efforts on the product, but especially the BENEFITS of the product to your visitor. that’s really what they are considering! They are naturally concerned with what it will do for them. Make that clear.
Do you need webpage building software? FREE HERE! Folks, I was putting up pages on the first day I tried. See this post about that very day!
The second of these Three things is to get the customers name and email address. Some people say this is the single most important goal to a sales page.
The reasoning behind that is that, on average, a sale is closed on the seventh closing attempt.
That explains the miserable closing ratios in Internet marketing when you compare it to Brick and Mortar retail. In this case we expect a closing ratio of better than 1 in 10. When you compare that to the often stated average closing ratio on a sales page expressed as 1 in 100 you can easily see that you must ask them to buy MORE THAN ONCE!
And the way you do this is with name and address capture and an autoresponder!
Here’s a good tip. When you are getting the opt ins from a salespage that is promoting, for example, website software, put those opt ins on a list named “website software”
Write the autoresponder series to concentrate on the benefits of that particular web page design software and send it to that list.
The more of these “benefits of website software” messages you send, the higher your closing ratio will be.
Say you have 100 people come to your offer in one day. You could expect one sale by the 1 in 100 formula that we all hear so often. The other 99 didn’t buy but maybe 10 of them opted in to your “website software benefits ecourse”
Now you are building your list of customers interested in web page software AND by the time the 5th to 10th message reaches them you’ll have another sale or two. This is huge.
If your closing ratio is raised from 1 in 100 to 2 in 100 you have doubled your sales with the addition of an autoresponder. And you built your list!
That example is just from one day so you can see what you’d have after just one month. Cool.
Folks, I use AWeber and so does just about everybody else! It’s $20/mo. and it pays for itself in what marketing you can do with it. This baby CAN EARN you money while you sleep.
The third of these Three Things that works with the other two so well to insure success is to make certain that the traffic reaching this sales page is traffic that is interested in website software.
The two most common ways of doing this is PPC and Article Marketing.
PPC is fast and doesn’t last and Article Marketing is slower, but builds and lasts. Ideally you run both…IF you can afford the keywords. Go for two articles a week. To get that done I aim at 3 per week.
To write the right article, grab the right keywords and aim for density around 3-5%. Have your BEST keyword toward the front of the title and same for introductory paragraph.
If you apply these three things to your affiliate marketing efforts look at what you will have done.
You’ll have sales pages touting one product and it’s benefits. The traffic headed to your salespage will be sorted by your keywords to be the ones most likely to respond to the offer.
And finally, you will be building a narrow focus list and raising your closing ratio for more sales at the same time.
Do this. Get good at it. You’ll be glad you did. By the way article marketing seems hard at first but it isn’t.
By the time you can get your article on Ezinearticles and Goarticles THESE GUYS can have them up on those and several hundred other directories and ezines. It’ll cost you about $37/mo but at the end of the first month you will have VARIATIONS of your article in THOUSANDS of places.
It’s got a little learning curve at first, and I had difficulty getting into the site because of password issues that kept coming up (made me crazy!), but it’s working and I aim to make it work a lot better…by writing more narrowly focused articles on the exact keywords that lead to my offers.
Don’t try to understand it before you do it. Do it and pretty soon you’ll understand it AND you will have gotten started!

There are two programs I recommend. They ARE FREE and they appear to be the BEST! Go to Cyberduck and/or Filezilla.
Fourth - You are going to need an autoresponder - the automatic email follow up wonder that makes you money even when you are passed out! Or asleep. Works there, too! I recommend AWeber and NO OTHER!
Fifth - You are going to have to drive traffic to your spanky new site and COLLECT MONEY! Oops, that’s two things.

Well, I hope you had a good Christmas. I also hope that you are feeling positive. It helps!
Here’s a way to feel better fast - Smile!
Scientists have proven that certain chemicals in your brain that make you feel good flood your brain cells when you turn up the corners of you mouth slightly. Even picturing a smile in your mind produces these chemicals.
So go for it! Smile. You’ll feel better. People you meet will feel better. It’s a winner all the way around.
I gotta think that you are interested in finding a way to make money online…am I right? Well, I am one stubborn guy when know I’m on the right path and I believe I am on the right path.
What path is it?
I picked the niche of Internet Marketing because I came from offline marketing and so much of this is the same. The big differences between marketing online vs marketing outside is the tools used and the cost to operate them.
Online marketing is incredibly cheap. With a little bit of labor I can set up a full fledged Internet Marketing business for under $200. That’s impossible in the offline world.
How can I say that? I have an offline business www.rileysrealwood.com/ Yep, that’s mine. Take a look. It’s named after me!
The overhead (cost of doing business) on that nice little store runs $40k - $45k per month) So, if you are using the 45,000/mo figure that means you have to PROFIT $1500/day to break even. That takes between 90 and 100 thousand in sales per month. Phew! No wonder so many of them go broke.
When I discovered Internet Marketing(IM) I was fabbergasted at the low operational expenses and at the same time overwhelmed with new terminology and equipment.
The marketing was about the same though.
I got thrown out of the store quite a while ago, so I had some time on my hands. And I had a laptop. And I saw IM as a fun opportunity.
So much money…so many ways to make it.
This morning, the morning after Christmas, I got up determined to do something for my readers in this post.
I’m going to tell you exactly what I did to get money going INTO my paypal account.
I’m also going to make you an offer that I am fairly certain a lot of you will want.
And then, if there’s is time I’m going to show you a “Biz in a Box” that I rigged up
But you are going to have to know how to do some things. The same things I did.
So, I barged right into Internet Marketing. I learned how to build a webpage.
Then I bought a domain name/ hosting package for it, and I put my webpage online.
I used FREE FTP and loaded some files by hand!
Then I started a blog. This one. I wanted to use the blog to detail my experiences going from knowing nothing about Internet Marketing to actually having money going into my paypal account. What a thrill!
You gotta get there! Don’t let the rush of making money out of the air… while you sleep, slip out of your grasp. If you are cut for this sort of thing then, by all means, do it!
Well, this happens. I’ll get a quick start tomorrow and finish this up.

Rain? - Deal With It!
Hello again!
I always was a bit of a loner…and the further I looked into Internet Marketing the less I liked it. I started to see too many of those headlines that started with “Who Else Wants To Pour Champaign In Their Hot Tub While Money Pours Into Their Accounts?”
I’ll bet MOST of the headlines on that type of salesletter begins with “Who else….”! I wonder who wrote it? I think it may have been one of the big time main guru types, it worked and everybody ran with it.
I would truly hate to split-test that baby and find our that it increases conversion by 10% because I can’t stand the sound of run-into-the-ground ad copy. Call me a snob…but…I want to do it my way.
Why do I want to do it my way? It’s really that, since I am myself, some people will bond with me and those are the ones I can help.
And because…when I am writing I just write as if I am talking to a friend. I imagine myself trying to explain to them, first, why I do this, and second, how I do it. It’s a bit of a task, but I like it!
I gotta tell you that, most of the time, when people ask me what I’m doing for a living, I respond with what I have been doing for 35 years! Marketing. Only now I am marketing via the internet!
Very few of them are interested… so, occasionally, I tell them about the times that I woke up with more money that I went to sleep with…due to the fact that I set up quality, automated websites, and drive traffic to them.
So, just before I moved up out of the “newcomer” bracket to my current efforts (you are here now) I decided I would NOT follow the crowd.
Maybe that’s where the money is. The big money. And that’s why the crowd is there.
But this is work! And I want it to be work that…one, I’m interested in, and two, I’m seeing it grow. And three, I don’t have to BS anybody.
This is all mine, I did it, it works (makes money) and I can show you how I did it. That’s authentic.
So expect that from me. I have much to share, and I will. Accurately.
Or you can run off into the “salespage insane asylum”, start casting about reading pitch pages, and whoa!
Guess what? While you were looking around, a lot of time and money has flowed past and you haven’t picked a bivouac, pitched a tent, or built a fire!
And wouldn’t cowboy coffee taste good right now? How about some biscuits?
Thank you for tolerating my cowboy metaphors but I did grow up in Montana, USA and I swam horses across the river and made coffee on the other side. Those were those days and they were good! These days are good, too!
It’s action that gets you there!
Sure, you have to study…but it’s equal amounts of study to action that will get you there (or here).
If I had a brand spanking new, chompin’ at the bit, rookie here, right now, asking me how they could make money on the internet, too… I’d say…
Take THIS TUTORIAL…DOWNLOAD NVU (the website software), build a page, call me and we’ll look at it.
I know this would be a perfect start. EVERYBODY would have gotten a faster, better start if webpage building was their FIRST SKILL LEARNED in Internet Marketing.
But, for many it was not. They had to do it the hard way if they did it at all.
So Let’s say we have picked our direction. We’ll improve all the time and at a faster rate all the time. That oughta get it.
And we will concentrate on the basics. That’s what champions do. They nail the basics. Ask Tiger.
And we’ll gladly share what wehave learned with those who need it - or want it - honestly and as simply as it can be done.

You May Be Able To Make Money Online By Yourself…But… December 22, 2008

Removing The Barriers
Hello again!
In the last post I detailed one of the “stumbling blocks” I have encountered in some of the “Do It This Way AND You’ll Have Big Cash In Two Weeks!” type programs.
Yes, I have fallen for the siren salespage that made it all sound so easy. Hasn’t everybody?
My main point in the last post was that they always seem to leave something out. That is…that their “step by step” plan is missing a step or two!
It seemed to me that, no matter how hard I tried to follow the plan, that I would invariably get to that place where I didn’t know how to proceed!
In my case it was when I got to the step that started with “Open a Google Adwords account.”
For a lot of folks, opening an account is achievable, but actually building an ad campaign that earns money faster that it costs money is practically impossible.
There’s too much that can go wrong, especially for beginners.
So that’s one example of a place you can get hung up and even hurt, financially, if you don’t at least have some familiarity with the “step”.
And almost all the programs that claim to be “The Way” to making money online will have these “steps,” that a lot of people won’t get past. Be it for reasons of patience or whatever people hit points they don’t want to go past. It becomes too difficult for them and they either quit or look for another way, which is going to have the same problem.
I fought that a while. When I first started looking into this it all seemed so reasonable.
You see, I’ve been in marketing a long time…say 35 years. But NOT Internet Marketing, and, naturally, it has it’s own unique methods. And tremendous growth potential.
One thing I can say for certain is that ALL the current sales techniques were being taught to me by the world’s best in the late 70’s. BEFORE we had computers we used TV, Radio, Newspaper Display ads, and most important, cheap rate snail mail. (If you’d like to read a bit about it I have a free book offer here - a book that I contributed to.) So, I saw this problem for what it was and I decided to eliminate my ignorance of all things mechanical in Internet Marketing.
My theory is that, as long as you don’t understand the mechanics (which I often refer to as “Infrastructure”)…the specific ones you don’t understand are going to stop you.
Well, I didn’t want to be stopped.
So I joined an Online Internet Marketing School and I immediately set about learning what I didn’t know and making a list of those things I had to have down pat so that I could do what I wanted to do.
And THAT’s Direct Sales by means of the Internet. At that time I knew Direct Selling but I didn’t know Internet Marketing Infrastructure.
Prior to this I really didn’t know what I didn’t know.
Things like “Building a Web Page.” I didn’t know how to do that and was seduced by those who said, “You can make money online without a website!”
Same with blogs, only I had heard that Google loves blogs AND now, every day, I get visitors to this blog from SERP’s (search engine page results) that Google served up to their query. (the words they typed in) A blog makes Traffic!
Other things I knew very little about were simple things like Domain Names and Hosting.
I avoided FTP (file transfer protocol) for a long time because I found a harder way first that was simply loading my website files up to my Hosts servers one at a time - by hand!
I could understand that. Then I found out later that FTP is FAR easier and will do other good things for you,too. Like back up large numbers of files or just transfer them someplace. Or duplicate or delete them!
I didn’t understand the autoresponder, list building, and email marketing. (Also known as “back end sales.”
Now I was on my way but I felt I needed to understand this at a higher level and I found that higher level training in a program run by Ken McCarthy called “The System.” I go into that a bit more on my next post. It’s important.
But, before I quit today let me tell you what my goal was, besides the obvious one of understanding Internet Marketing.
I wanted an online business that made money even when I wasn’t there to watch it!
Tell me that doesn’t sound great.
Now, I know what that takes and I am doing it…if at a low level. More on that later, too.

Going it Alone?
Hello Again!
I started out knowing little to nothing about Internet Marketing and, if you are even a little like me, so did you.
Early on I ran into one of the very best things I could have. It’s an Online Internet Marketing School that has a low, one time only fee to join for life. It’s extensive and the information in there is top caliber. I still go there for a refresher course now and then. I’ll probably never quit.
I’m guessing but, I’ll bet good money that there is well over five thousand websites out there right now, telling you that they can show you the way to Internet Riches if you will just buy their “thing, plan, way, method, or secrets.)
I went for some of those and I ran into the same thing over and over. Either I didn’t like what they were showing me, or I didn’t trust them, or whatever…it wasn’t for me.
And there was one other thing I didn’t like. It seemed that there was always something missing in the program and that was the thing that would keep you from progressing to actually earning money.
One of the common “missing things” was Google adwords!
You’d get this new program and while still excited that this might be the way for you finally, they tell you to open a Google Adwords account.
Well, really, the account can be handy but there is a catch 22 there.
Yes, Google Adwords has made people good money time and time again and will go on to do so.
Always up for learning a new way to drive traffic to an offer, I plunged in. Opening the account was easy enough but I soon learned that that there were many subtleties involved and I got to understand them, but not overnight.
No, it took me a couple of months to start to really understand how it worked and that was only because someone else was paying for me to learn to use Google Adwords in order to drive traffic to their website.
That’s trust! By the way I studied Google Adwords with Perry Marshall’s stuff and, while I can’t say for sure, many top level Internet Marketer’s consider his stuff the very best. Try his free mini course.
You can make some big, bad mistakes in there and Google doesn’t give you your money back if it doesn’t work!
Check this out…I was running about $2000 per month in clicks and getting thousands of people to the website each month. It made a huge difference in sales at the store once actual, real, targeted traffic started showing up, on a regular basis, to their website.
Then they decided to get a “better website”. We also switched hosting companies.
I don’t know why I did this or even how it happened but here it is. We moved the website to another host and I built a few ads to start off with that were more relevant to the new website.
I must have gotten something wrong, but ONE thing was definitely a mistake.
I took off on a nine day motorcycle ride.
While I was gone business at the store slowed down quite a bit. First slowdown since I started driving traffic to their website. We talked every day and this thing was starting to ruin my motorcycle tour!
When I got back I ran to my computer (I should have taken it with me) and I found out that I had made a mistake in the new ads. I left a letter out of the url! One little letter! It was an “s”.
I had driven 700 paid click targeted traffic customers to the 404 Forbidden Zone!
That cost me $600 bucks and I think it cost the store a lot more than that because they were off 30% for 10 days and grouchier than a stepped on cat.
Oops! This all started because I bought a program that was going to teach me how to make money online, BUT FIRST, I had to learn Google Adwords. That set me back two or three months…BUT I did learn Google Adwords.
I also learned “Check Your Links”. Every time. I still do.
So the program I bought that said “BUT FIRST - you need to learn Google adwords!” should have added “AND to CHECK YOUR LINKS!”
See…they always leave something out. What’d I tell you. Caveat Emptor. Trust no one. Not even yourself.
This is automatic money online here! Only it can go both directions.

Hello Again:
It’s kind of funny… the shark in the headline thing but let me tell you there was a very popular book 20 years ago. It was a business book. A book that is supposed to enhance your ability to make money as an entreprenuer.
It was called “Swimming with the Sharks” and I bought it because I had one of those business books by the month club deals and I had to pick something.
I don’t think it did me much good but you are reading the posts of a man who has been in business for 35 years and who LOVES to read.
I also love to avoid sharks.
I am a relative newcomer to Internet Marketing but I have a deep history of sales and advertising and I want to say something here.
Internet marketing can be what you want it to be.
But, I want to describe the Internet Marketing World Online to you in a way that might help you.
Here it is…First this market is HUGE!
My research has led me to believe that the Internet Marketing Niche (if you could call it a niche) is not only huge, it is renewing itself daily. And growing…look at the economic news lately. That by itself could put the Make Money Online business into the single fastest growing segment of entrepreneurial commerce there is…anywhere. On Earth.
But let’s talk about right now.
My guess is 1/2 Million to One Million people wash up onto the shores of our IM world every day and few of them have a good experience. Why?
Because the established guru types already have it covered by promoting these “make yourself rich practically overnight with no skills or website by following my step by step plan” deals.
That headline might be a little over the top but can you imagine the effect it has?
Thousands of hungry newcomers hit this beach daily and face the dug-in withering fire of offers to make them rich in a hurry for $47 to $97. Very lucrative! For the Sellers.
Well, I don’t like that and I am realistic enough to know that I can’t stop it. So I’m carrying on.
I’m showing newcomers how to get started the way almost everybody did because it is necessary to go this way. It’s just that “Covering the Basics” is not titillating ad copy. Most people are barely interested, but, here’s the deal.
First, you have to learn the basics. Sorry to bore you or disappoint.
But the basics can be fun! Not to mention profitable. They work! After all, they are the basics!
If I was trying to show you how to take the engine out of your car I would hope that you knew how to use some basic (that word again) tools. Like a wrench.
If you go with these fast talking newbie scavengers you will be trying to work without knowing wrenches!
But you don’t have to and still many of you will. It’s more exciting. And folks are in a hurry.
Still, I decided to do this blog so that I could ease the passage of newcomers into this business.
It’s a loud business. It reminds me of carnival barkers only cleaner. Look for a minute and you may see yourself in the crowd.
Are you looking for the fast way? If so, I will not interest you, and you should move on.
If you are looking to start an online business, with the right tools, that will grow and support you, then you are in the right place!
I have working knowledge of the basics and I am currently using that knowledge to make money.
You could do the same thing. It works for me.

You probably already know a little about good, low cost reports.
If you come around here often you know I am big on products that will…
One. Teach you a valuable skill…and
Two..Are an actual product that you can then sell.
Honestly…what could be better. You know there’s no free lunch.
I picked up on this quite a while back. Think about it.
You spot an under $10 plr report that covers something you need to learn and/or looks like something that would be a natural to sell on your site.
You pay some measly amount…usually under ten bucks, and download it.
You learn a valuable way to make money.
And you are provided the product and everything you need to sell it. And now, you start selling that. You just have to get started and it will happen.
Man, that sounds easy and straight forward.
Except for one thing. It’s always something. Ask Roseanne Roseannadanna! (Google her)
Like…do you have a domain name yet, and hosting. If not - full stop - you can go nowhere.
Pick a domain name and register it immediately. Or quit.
And…do you have hosting? (a place to hang your web pages. Your offers.) Get some right now and get this dumb obstacle out of your way!

Yep, those few little things are what makes it impossible for good qualified people to get ahead in this biz.
My suggestion? Get ‘er done! Open the gates to IM Heaven! Knock down the obstacles! Figure it out! It isn’t hard! It just looks that way at first. Get with it! Just do it!
It is absolutely necessary and all those guys out there trying to sell you a “plan” KNOW in their heart of hearts that you won’t go anywhere because you can’t handle the basics.
What are the basics? I was hoping you’d ask.
First pick Hostgator and get a domain name and a hosting plan.
Why do I say that? I’ve had several and these guys are great! Best customer support I EVER had! Reasonable pricing too! Just take my word for it…my word is good. I’ve been there.
As for FTP? Surprise! It’s FREE! Choose Cyberduck or Filezilla and just go!
At the time of this post there is trouble at these sites but I guess it will be fixed pretty soon.
With the above in place all you need now is an HTML web page to upload! I call that “hanging’ the page.
Do it back and forth a few times (with changes), so you learn how to correct typos! Typos happen!

At the start of this post was talking about the list. I’m not going to go into deep detail about the list or list marketing. (email marketing) except one thing…How Do You Get Them to Sign Up?
Here is how it’s done currently. An opt-in form shows up a little after you hit the page. The opt-in form offers something relevant and valuable in exchange for the sign up. Some people sign up and some don’t.
It’s the ones that don’t sign up that are causing me a little angst.
Let me tell you why.
From my perspective, all visitors to my blog (center of my business) are welcome and it’s my job to try to help them. I like this job. I made it for myself.
A lot of you visitors can do it too. It is very important to me that I help you as much as I can or as much as you will let me.
Harking back to the idea that some of you sign up and some of you don’t is exactly what have been building up to.
In this world the visitors who sign up get “Ethically Bribed” with an ebook or two used as an inducement to sign up. But that’s not the only thing the subscriber gets that the non-subscribers don’t get.
There is the OTO. (IM acronym for One Time Offer!) It used to be the Thank You for signing up page that you would see after hitting submit.

This is a little like finding the treasure at the “X” on the map. I always wanted to do that. But knowing how to dig isn’t as important as knowing where to dig.
When discussing marketing and using the word “evergreen” we mean it in the sense that evergreen is timeless. It always works.
Hello fellow Internet Marketing Enthusiasts.
Unless you are a regular reader of this blog you probably haven’t run across me before. My name is Riley West and I now have a different career than I used to have.
I have spent 36 years years in advertising, direct marketing, sales, and putting together efficient (ie..makes money) ad campaigns for Brick and Mortar outfits. Mostly mine!
And now…well, I am in the arena of Internet Marketing. I retired a while back was bored in two weeks. I wanted to sell something. It’s what I do.
So I looked around and discovered the world of Internet Marketing. I liked what I saw. Mostly.
To me it looked exactly like the sales and marketing I had been studying, applying, and teaching in the furniture business for years.
Well, sort of exactly. If you don’t include the Internet itself, op-tin forms, and autoresponders, along with a few other tools of the internet marketers trade, it is very similar to traditional selling techniques.
The IM sales we are familiar are incredibly similar to the direct selling you have seen so many times. Anybody remember Ron “But Wait!” Popeil? Hint… The Veg-O-Matic.
Just as there are techniques and methods in offline business, there are also techniques and methods in Internet Marketing that you need to know if you want to make money online.
Like all business people, those who are ‘in the know’ use tricks of the trade that become second nature. You might think you know what these trade secrets are, and maybe you do, in theory, but putting them into practice is a different matter.
I spent years in the furniture business and I can tell you that there are methods of selling, moving, and displaying furniture that someone outside the business can’t imagine.
The special techniques and methods that are the essence of Internet Marketing are also the MAIN difference between people who make money online and people who don’t. Those that earn their living from the Internet easily and instinctively, incorporate these trade secrets, these ‘Evergreen Methods’, into everything they do.
I’ve read hundreds of books on selling and marketing and this book was different. It was written up in an old ebook that I had purchased the plr rights to quite a while back, like so many others gathering digital dust on my hard drive.
As I was rewriting the chapters to use on my blog I noticed certain techniques were included in EVERY SINGLE successful sales page I had studied or built myself.
Sales pages that hadn’t made much money were the ones that failed to include these methods. I quickly realized that I had stumbled on to something pretty exciting.
I’ll tell you what that “something very exciting” is… I have read, and in some cases, studied hundreds of pitch pages. I’ve written several now in use. I filled a file with them.
So that you’ll understand, I am a compulsive consumer of marketing ideas. I always have been. I read about it at lunch! Unless I’m with someone. My car is full of marketing books and also some of those books like “Think and Grow Rich”. Not to mention tapes and cd’s. I think this is fun.
Anyway, I went back and sorted the salespages, into two piles…Successful and Unsuccessful.
Sure enough, the ones I knew were successful had many of these techniques employed and (you know what’s next) the unsuccessful ones had failed to use ANY of these standard techniques and methods.
The successful ones don’t use all the techniques in this book all the time, but they do use SOME of them all the time. I’ve not added any padding or fluff here. To the contrary, I have pared it down to what I think are the basics.
I want to emphasise that these sales principles have been around for a LONG time. It’s just lately that they have been applied to the Internet Marketing arena. I have been personally using them for almost forty years.
This book will take you straight into the sales principles that I firmly believe can be a life, and income changing, read for you. It sure was for me. I remember the very day I first ingested this information and it changed my life for the better right away.
You’ll recognize some of these some of these secrets…because you’ll have seen them on sales pages before. Or even TV and catalogues. You might even feel that these are old, worn out techniques.
LISTEN CLOSELY – You couldn’t be more wrong! Human nature does NOT change.
